ein Hardware-Modul, das die Verschlüsselung und Entschlüsselung von Daten leistet (Datenverschlüsselung). Eine Krypto-Card enthält integrierte Schaltungen (Chip), welche für das Ver- und Entschlüsseln verantwortlich sind, und einen Speicher, um die Bedien-Software und die Schlüssel zu speichern. Aufgrund der speziellen Ausrichtung und Konstruktion arbeitet eine Krypto-Card wesentlich schneller als ein Verschlüsselungsprogramm. Sie wird in einen vorhandenen oder eigens dafür konstruierten Steckplatz eines Computers eingesteckt und verschlüsselt auf Anfrage des Benutzers. Nur wer die richtige Karte besitzt, kann später die Daten entschlüsseln.
 
Die erste zur Serienproduktion geeignete Krypto-Card wurde Ende des Jahres 2000 vorgestellt. Sie hat die Ausmaße einer Scheckkarte.
